Academic Affairs to lead admissions, enrollment
On Oct. 1, the units of Admissions, Scholarships, Enrollment Marketing, Orientation and Events, Student Recruitment, and Financial Aid at Mississippi State are all moving to the Division of Academic Affairs from Student Affairs. "Even though these units will no longer be in Student Affairs, we will continue to work closely with Student Affairs in recruiting, enrolling, and retaining students," said MSU Provost and Executive Vice President Jerry Gilbert.
'Read-Out' celebrates Banned Books Week
In protest of censorship, Mississippi State University Libraries leaders last week organized a Read-Out for faculty and staff to share sections of historically suppressed books. As part of MSU's recognition of Banned Books Week, Sept. 21-27, eight university representatives selected and read from often-banned books, six of which are generally considered children's books. The Read-Out was held in Mitchell Memorial Library's Grisham Room.
Visiting engineers promote communication
In the latest installment of Mississippi State University's Maroon & Write Speaker Series, two LSU engineers explained how they spearheaded their institution's Communication Across the Curriculum initiative. Warren Waggenspack, associate professor in LSU's College of Engineering, and Warren Hull, director of the Chevron Center for Engineering Education, presented "CxC in LSU Engineering: Effective Incorporation of Formal/Informal Writing" earlier this month.
BCoE partners with Entergy to develop new software
A team of Bagley College engineers at Mississippi State helped develop computer software that saves time, money and energy for a national utility company. The team has worked on RSA for two years, progressing from idea and proof-of-concept to production and software release. Tommy Morris, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, served as principle investigator of the project.
Center for Distance Education: Survey says...
New survey results show Mississippi State University students taking electronic courses care most about financial assistance, easy access to course information and registration, and recommendations about career prospects. Steve Taylor, executive director for the center, shared general comparisons between undergraduate and graduate students during a lunch-and-learn session in mid-September.
Minority & Women Vendor Fair coming up
The Mississippi State University Minority and Women Vendor Fair will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 14 at the Hunter Henry Center on the Starkville campus. This special event seeks to broaden the base of suppliers doing business with the MSU. Department representatives will have an opportunity to meet and exchange information with a variety of potential vendors and obtain procurement training provided by the Mississippi Development Authority, Mississippi Minority Business Alliance and WhereToGo411.
Applications sought for teaching excellence awards
Mississippi State University faculty who are interested in submitting applications for the 2015 Grisham Master Teacher Award, the Alumni Association Early Career Teaching Excellence Award or the Alumni Association Graduate Teaching Excellence Award have until Oct. 13 to do so.
Wanted: cross-college research funding proposals
The Office of Research and Economic Development is again soliciting proposals from Mississippi State faculty who desire to create interdisciplinary, cross-college research groups on campus. These grants will be in the amount of $2,000 each and limited to a period of 12 months (renewable one time for a total of 24 months and $4,000). The grants are intended to facilitate interdisciplinary interaction between faculty and students that have a common research theme.

Register today for CERT half-marathon, 5K
The Community Emergency Response Team at Mississippi State is hosting The Preparathon -- a half-marathon, 5K, half-mile family fun run and Emergency Preparedness Fair -- in mid-October. Proceeds from the races will benefit the Oktibbeha County Volunteer Fire Departments, OSERVS and the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services.
'SEC Nation' to originate from the Junction Saturday
"SEC Nation," the SEC Network’s traveling college football morning show, will originate from the Junction on Saturday prior to Mississippi State’s Southeastern Conference home opener against No. 6 Texas A&M. The show airs live from 9-11 a.m., and will lead into the Bulldogs’ 11 a.m. kickoff against the Aggies on ESPN. Fans are encouraged to arrive early and wear maroon.
