Xu takes in-depth look at homework distractions
A new regional study by a senior learning researcher and Mississippi State faculty member is the first to link homework distraction to a wide range of variables. The multi-level analysis by Jianzhong Xu, a professor in the university's College of Education, examined a range of variables affecting homework distraction, at both the student level and the class level.
'Dual Use Dilemma in Biological Research' training
The Office of Research and Economic Development at Mississippi State will host a Responsible Conduct of Research training session on the "Dual Use Dilemma in Biological Research" Tuesday. The session will be led by Patricia Cox, the university's biological safety officer, and FBI Special Agent Brandon Grant.
Pulitzer finalist, historian Herman speaks Thursday
Pulitzer Prize finalist and historian Arthur Herman is the next speaker in Mississippi State's Institute for the Humanities Distinguished Lecture Series. His Thursday presentation in the McCool Hall atrium will be titled "Arsenal of Democracy: How American Business Created Victory in World War II." Open to all, the program begins at 4 p.m.
Annual open house at CVM this week
The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine will open its doors from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday for its annual open house at the Wise Center, located on the south side of campus off Spring Street.
Senior Homeland Security official visiting April 17
A senior official from the federal agency charged with ensuring a homeland that is safe, secure and resilient against terrorism and other hazards will visit Mississippi State April 17. Peter Fonash, chief technology officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) cybersecurity and communications organization, will meet with faculty and students, tour several of the university's research labs, and also present a public lecture.
Taylor enters state veterinary hall of fame
A charter faculty member of Mississippi State University's College of Veterinary Medicine has been inducted into the state's veterinary profession's Hall of Fame. Clyde Taylor, a native of Natchez, was named to the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Association's Hall of Fame at its recent winter meeting in Starkville. He spent his entire career in Mississippi, working first in the Department of Agriculture, then in private practice in Brandon before joining the MSU faculty.
MSU doctors prescribe different kind of medicine
Part of a national campaign by the American College of Sports Medicine, the Mississippi State University Longest Student Health Center's Exercise is Medicine initiative has had physicians writing prescriptions for exercise since 2009. Joyce Yates, MSU's director of health education and wellness, said physicians prescribing exercise address medical issues through prevention and treatment.

Golf, forestry collaborate to benefit MSU course
When the head of Mississippi State's Institute of Golf needed the right trees to improve playability and course safety, he had only to travel a short distance to the university's College of Forest Resources. The golf course now is home to 2,200 newly planted trees thanks to the successful collaboration.
Chemistry department plans golf tournament
An April 20 public golf tournament at Mississippi State will benefit undergraduate scholarships in the university's chemistry department. One of many activities surrounding the annual Super Bulldog Weekend, the four-person scramble will begin with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start at the MSU Golf Course, located approximately three miles east of campus on Hwy. 182.
Flanigan joins men's basketball staff
Rick Ray's second hire at Mississippi State is certainly no stranger to the South or the Southeastern Conference. Last Thursday, the new Bulldogs coach announced former Auburn All-SEC standout Wes Flanigan will join his staff as an assistant after spending the previous two seasons at Nebraska.
