Diversity award nominations due Friday
The President's Commission on the Status of Minorities is accepting nominations for the 2014 MSU Diversity Awards. The annual awards program is designed to recognize individuals and teams of individuals who have demonstrated a significant commitment to enhancing diversity at Mississippi State University. Nomination packets are due this Friday.

Spirit of State nomination, application deadline
Applications and nominations are now being accepted for the ninth-annual Spirit of State awards. With these awards, Mississippi State will recognize outstanding contributions made by our students toward improving student life. These awards are open to all MSU students from all campuses and recognize excellence in campus involvement; service to the university community; actions that promote the Spirit of State; and overall impact on peers and the broader campus community. Friday is the deadline.

S.M.A.R.T. shuttle system sees increase in riders
During the first three days of the 2014 spring semester, buses of the new Starkville-Mississippi State University Area Rapid Transit carried a total of 15,250 riders. S.M.A.R.T. is an expansion of an earlier shuttle system that primarily was focused on the MSU campus. The new service provides campus-to-city service from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, with a couple of routes also operating Saturdays.

Sellers donates forestry papers
A retired Mississippi State University professor recently donated his professional archives to the Forest History Society Library in Durham, N.C. Forest products professor emeritus Terry Sellers Jr. was invited to donate his collection of research, publications, patents and speeches to the nonprofit educational institution associated with Duke University. A Sharp Professor of Forest Products, Sellers worked at MSU as a researcher and educator for 24 years before retiring in 2004.

University hosting PERS seminar Feb. 26
Human Resources Management at Mississippi State is hosting a PERS pre-retirement, full-day seminar on Feb. 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bost Extension Center on the Starkville campus. The seminar offers general information on a range of topics, including estate planning, the Mississippi Deferred Compensation Plan and Trust, Social Security benefits, and PERS benefits and options.

These awards recognize women who are advocates for the well being, development and advancement of all women on Mississippi State University campuses and the surrounding communities. MSU faculty, staff and students are invited to nominate campus and community women for the awards.

The nomination period is open for Mississippi State University's 2014 Research Awards and the Ralph E. Powe Research Excellence Award. Employees and students are encouraged to submit nominations for this year's program. Legislators to honor Walters, Hogan
Mississippi State mathematics instructor Kimberly "Kim" Walters and Student Association President Michael Hogan are Mississippi State's 2014 HEADWAE faculty and student honorees. An acronym for Higher Education Appreciation Day, Working for Academic Excellence, the program has been held since 1987. Administered by the Board of Trustees, State Institutions of High Learning, the event annually recognizes individuals on campuses "who have made outstanding contributions in promoting academic excellence."
Apply today: Maroon Institute for Writing Excellence
The Maroon & Write QEP Office is pleased to offer the Maroon Institute for Writing Excellence in June. The MIWE is designed to introduce writing-to-learn strategies for use in the classroom. During this three-week interactive workshop, participants will receive guidance in revising syllabi and creating relevant writing assignments. Participants will meet 1-3 p.m. Monday-Thursday, June 5-26. The application deadline is March 7.
Faculty art exhibit opens on University Drive
Creations by 19 faculty members in Mississippi State's College of Architecture, Art and Design are being featured at the university's Visual Arts Center Gallery. Located at 808 University Drive, the gallery will sponsor a reception this Thursday to honor the artists. Admission to the 5-7 p.m. event, like the gallery itself, is free and open to all. Taking place through March 29, the new showing features diverse styles and several mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, furniture design, graphic design, fiber art, and printmaking.
Johnson joins football coaching staff
Brian Johnson, the winningest quarterback in Utah history and current quarterbacks coach for the Utes, has been named quarterbacks coach at Mississippi State, head coach Dan Mullen announced last week. Mullen also announced that Billy Gonzales and John Hevesy have been promoted to co-offensive coordinators. Greg Knox will serve as special teams coordinator in addition to running backs coach.
