Schmitz elected president of geology state board
Darrel Schmitz, head of the geosciences department at Mississippi State University, was recently elected president of the Mississippi State Board of Registered Professional Geologists, which is charged with administering the state's Registered Professional Geologists Practice Act of 1997.
Booth, Butler honored for outstanding service
Mississippi State University College of Forest Resources forest supervisor Misty Booth of Starkville and forest products machinist/instrument maker David Butler of Sturgis were honored with 2011 Doris Lee Memorial Staff Awards for outstanding service.

Tabereaux elected to Kennedy Center ed board
Charlotte B. Tabereaux, the education director of Mississippi State University's Riley Center for Education and Performing Arts in downtown Meridian, is a new member of the Kennedy Center Partners in Education Advisory Committee, a national board.
Mississippi and the Morrill Act in focus Thursday
Mississippi State University assistant professor of history James Giesen will present "History of the Morrill Act: The Mississippi Perspective" on Thursday at 3 p.m. The free event open to all is Gamma Sigma Delta's inaugural spring seminar, and it will be held in Thompson Hall's Tully Auditorium. A reception follows.
Export compliance training, inspection this week
Mississippi State University will host a leading security consultant for two days of export compliance training, auditing and an inspection this week. Charles "Chip" Palmer, the vice president for training and business development of Maryland-based Export Compliance Solutions LLC (ECS), will be on campus Tuesday and Wednesday to provide important training for MSU faculty and staff working on or managing contracts that involve Export Administrations Regulations (EAR) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
Education forum showcases research
"In Pursuit of External Funding: Lessons Learned" is the theme for the fifth-annual College of Education's faculty and student research forum to be held March 30 at Mississippi State. Martha Kanter, under secretary for the U.S. Department of Education, will deliver a keynote address at 9 a.m. in the Bost Extension theater. "Affordability, Quality and Completion for an America Built to Last" is the title of her presentation.
Ragtime Jazz Festival to 'razzle-dazzle' campus
Dynamic musical showmanship and toe-tapping entertainment again are on the schedule for the sixth annual Charles Templeton Ragtime Jazz Festival at Mississippi State. Taking place on the university campus Friday and Saturday, the major spring event includes evening concerts in Lee Hall's Bettersworth Auditorium, along with daytime sessions and tours at the Templeton Music Museum in Mitchell Memorial Library.
Zacharias Distinguished Staff Award nominations
Staff Council is seeking nominations for the Zacharias Distinguished Staff Awards. Nominations are being accepted for professional and support staff employees who work at least half-time, have been employed at Mississippi State University for a minimum of three years, and represent the nomination criteria for the award. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 12.
Faculty/Staff Golf League kick-off meeting Tuesday
The MSU Faculty/Staff Golf League will hold a kickoff meeting this Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Sanderson Center's conference room. League membership is open to all MSU faculty and spouses, staff and their spouses, graduate students and their spouses, and friends of MSU faculty and staff and their spouses. Retired faculty and staff and their spouses are especially welcome to join.
Former USDA Undersecretary lectures Wednesday
A former senior administrator with the U.S. Department of Agriculture is this year's guest for Mississippi State's 2012 Carlton N. Owen Lecture Series. Mark E. Rey, undersecretary for natural resources and environment from 2001-09, will lead the March 28 public program.
Tuck to speak on 'Leadership Perspective' Thursday
Amy Tuck, executive director of campus operations at Mississippi State University and former lieutenant governor of the State of Mississippi, will present "A Perspective on Leadership: A Path to Success" on March 29, at 1 p.m., in the Colvard Student Union, Ballroom U.
Staff Council hosting Alzheimer's care workshops
Mississippi State University's Staff Council is partnering with the Alzheimer's Association-Mississippi Chapter in April to offer one and a half days of programming geared towards family members and caretakers of Alzheimer's patients and anyone interested in learning more about this disease.
Stopczynski, Elliott join football support staff
Head football coach Dan Mullen announced two new additions to the Mississippi State University football support staff last Wednesday: Niel Stopczynski and Brett Elliott. Stopczynski will serve as assistant recruiting coordinator, and Elliott will be the graduate assistant for offense.
