Brenner appointed to standards committee

Devon Brenner, an associate professor in Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education, has been selected by a national organization to serve on a committee that sets national standards for certified teachers of reading and language arts.

Brenner was chosen by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards from a pool of about 500 applicants for the 12-member committee of educators from throughout the nation to ensure that standards reflect the best practices and latest research in the field. More than 6,000 teachers nationwide have achieved National Board Certification in Literacy: Reading-Language Arts.

As part of the national board's mission to provide high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and do, the Literacy: Reading Language-Arts committee reviews and revises current standards that are the basis for national board certification in the field. Practicing classroom teachers fill a majority of seats on standards committees while other members represent districts, states and higher education.

Mississippi is fifth in the nation in the number of board certified teachers -- teachers who demonstrate exemplary teaching and reflection.

Additionally, Brenner serves on the organization's standards writing team for early and middle childhood reading and language arts.

The National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, commonly referred to as NBPTS, is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan and nongovernmental organization that provides advanced standards, assessments and professional development resources to educators at all stages in their professional career.
