Carolina Chocolate Drops perform Thursday
Grammy winning banjo and fiddle folk artists will perform Thursday, Nov. 10 as part of Mississippi State University's Lyceum Series.
General admission tickets for the Carolina Chocolate Drops' 7:30 p.m. performance are available at the Campus Activities Office in Suite 300 of the Colvard Student Union or by calling 662-325-2930.
The performance will take place in Lee Hall's Bettersworth Auditorium.
Tickets also may be purchased online at www.lyceum.msstate.edu. Free MSU student tickets are available before the performance, and there is a discount for MSU employees and senior citizens.
Recent Grammy Award winner for Best Traditional Folk Album, the band formed after members Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson met at the 2005 Black Banjo Gathering in Asheville, N.C.
All three trained in the Piedmont banjo and fiddle musical tradition under the tutelage of Joe Thompson. While old-time Southern string music often is associated with Caucasian musicians from Appalachia, Giddens has observed that "it seems that two things get left out of the history books. One, that there was string band music in the Piedmont, period. (And that) black folk were such a huge part of string tradition."
