In 2012, city of Starkville and Mississippi State leaders announced plans for the university’s shuttle system to expand into the community, creating Starkville-MSU Area Rapid Transit -- the SMART system.
Since January 2014, 2.16 million riders have used the free service on campus and in the community. Last year, approximately 750,000 riders used the system, according to MSU Director of Parking and Transit Jeremiah Dumas.
As SMART continues to grow, the system is developing a new application for funding from the Mississippi Department of Transportation Public Transportation Division's Rural Area Program to provide enhanced public transportation services for Starkville and Oktibbeha County.
A public hearing will be held about the grant application at Starkville City Hall on Tuesday [Feb. 21] at 6 p.m., and students, faculty, staff and other members of the community are invited to attend to learn more about SMART's future and to share their experiences with the SMART system.
