Daniewicz to lead Mechanical Engineering
A long-time educator and well-known researcher will lead the Bagley College of Engineering's (BCoE) department of mechanical engineering.
Steve R. Daniewicz assumed the role of department head on July 1. He has served in the interim since Louay Chamra, now dean of the college of engineering and computer science at Oakland University in Michigan, stepped down from the post in 2009.
"Dr. Steven Daniewicz is recognized nationally for his research in the area of fatigue and fracture mechanics and his leadership in the American Society for Testing and Materials. I am very pleased that he has agreed to serve as head of the department of mechanical engineering, and I know he will provide the leadership needed to move the department to the next level," dean Sarah Rajala said.
Daniewicz joined the Mississippi State faculty in 1994 as an assistant professor. Since that time he has worked his way up the faculty ranks becoming a full professor in 2004. He has also served the department as graduate coordinator and a member of the curriculum review committee.
As a researcher, Daniewicz's work focuses on fatigue and fracture mechanics and has earned funding from the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA and the Department of Energy among others. He has twice earned an MSU Hearin Professor award, which recognizes outstanding teaching and research. He currently serves as an executive member of the ATSM International committee E-08 on fatigue and fracture.
Daniewicz holds a bachelor's degree in welding engineering technology from Arizona State University. He earned master's and doctoral degrees from Ohio State University in welding engineering and mechanical engineering respectively.
The mechanical engineering department is housed in Carpenter Hall on MSU's historic Drill Field. With approximately 600 students enrolled in its bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs, the mechanical engineering department ranks as the largest in the BCoE. In addition to teaching and advising duties, the department's faculty members also work with MSU's many research centers.
Composed of eight academic departments, the Bagley College of Engineering is Mississippi State's third largest college. It currently ranks 34th among all engineering colleges nationally in research and development expenditures according to the National Science Foundation.
