A Bagley College of Engineering professor received a regional award for his commitment to teaching, research and scholarship.
Mark F. Horstemeyer, a professor and the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems chair in computational solid mechanics, has earned the 2015 Southeastern Conference Faculty Achievement Award for Mississippi State University.
Horstemeyer is one of 14 professors from across the conference who earned this distinction along with a $5,000 honorarium. He is also eligible for the SEC Professor of the Year Award, which will be announced later this month.
“We are proud of Dr. Horstemeyer for this recognition of his many accomplishments,” interim dean Jason Keith said. “In addition to his research, he has mentored dozens of undergraduate and graduate students throughout his career contributing not only to the success of our students, but also the future of the industry.”
Only full-ranking tenured professors at SEC member institutions are eligible for this award. They are selected based on their achievements in teaching, research and scholarship.
“My success is a result of the many people who have always been supportive of me for the 13 years I have been at MSU,” Horstemeyer said.
Horstemeyer joined the Mississippi State faculty in 2002. His book, “Integrated Computational Materials Engineering for Metals,” summarizes his long-term research on microstructure-property multiscale modeling.
Most recently, Horstemeyer has turned his research to finding new designs and materials to make protective head gear, such as football helmets, more effective. His goal is to help reduce the instance of concussions and other traumatic brain injuries among athletes at all levels of play.
Horstemeyer’s accomplishments have earned him the rank of Fellow in four international professional organizations: the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society of Automotive Engineers International, ASM International and the American Society for Mechanical Engineers.
On campus, Horstemeyer holds the rank of Giles professor, the highest faculty honor at Mississippi State University. He also has earned the Ralph E. Powe Research Excellence Award, the university’s highest research honor.
Before calling Starkville home, Horstemeyer lived in California where he managed the fluid and thermal modeling department at Sandia National Laboratories. He holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in engineering mechanics from Ohio State University, and a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University.
As the Southeastern Conference’s academic initiative, SECU encourages higher education collaboration between the faculty, administrators and students at its 14 member institutions. The SECU aims to recognize deserving scholars’ accomplishments to promote regional academic success. The initiative also helps pave the way for future educational endeavors and provide opportunities to SECU members.
