'I Bleed Maroon' blood drive underway
Mississippi State campus radio station WMSV 91.1 FM and United Blood Services will host a week-long blood drive event April 12-17 -- believed to be the first of its kind.
“I Bleed Maroon” will consist of nine blood drives in six days and will be held at bloodmobiles located throughout campus and in Starkville.
“This event is expected to provide nearly one-quarter of the blood needed for area patients in April,” commented Caroline Pugh, donor recruitment representative with United Blood Services. “This could be really huge, and we want students and the people of Starkville to participate. We’ve made a commitment to our hospitals, and events like I Bleed Maroon can help us get them the blood they need.”
Each donor will receive a free “I Bleed Maroon” T-shirt and free cover to Rick’s Cafe on April 25. They’ll also be entered into a daily drawing for prizes and for the grand prize, a free semester of textbooks from Barnes & Noble.
United Blood Services provides blood for OCH Regional Medical Center, North Mississippi Medical Center hospitals, Baptist Memorial-Golden Triangle and most hospitals in Northeast Mississippi and Northwest Alabama. Volunteer blood donors and blood drive coordinators make a difference every day in the lives of patients in need of lifesaving blood. One donation helps to save up to three lives.
Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 years old must have signed permission from a parent or guardian. Donors receive a free cholesterol test. A photo ID is required to donate.
