Mid-week event to launch 2011 Maroon Edition
At a Wednesday [May 11] public event, Mississippi State President Mark E. Keenum and other administrative and faculty leaders will formally announce the next selection for the university's 2011 Maroon Edition common reading program.
The 2 p.m. public program in the John Grisham Room of Mitchell Memorial Library will be followed by a reception. Compliments of the president, a free copy of the book will be given to the first 50 individuals who sign in.
In addition, limited-edition prints illustrating elements of the book will be presented to two audience members selected randomly.
In a departure from previous book selections, this year's Maroon Edition features a major work by a Pulitzer-Prize winning Mississippi author. Literary scholar and MSU English professor emeritus Noel Polk will be among those discussing the book's significance.
The Maroon Edition project is an annual initiative to engage all freshmen, along with interested members of the campus community, in reading the same book during the summer term and fall semester. Stimulating intellectual and cultural discussions among new students, while encouraging dialogues with other students and the administration, faculty and staff, are its primary goals.
The effort also typically sponsors a major service project in conjunction with reading activities, as well as involving the local community through the Starkville Reads program.
