DAFVM and Regions Bank honor superior faculty

Mississippi State University’s Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine recently honored five faculty members with the Regions Bank-DAFVM Superior Faculty Awards in a new program designed to highlight exemplary work in five key areas.
James Warnock, associate professor of biomedical engineering program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, received the Teaching Award for his innovative teaching methods and commitment to his students. He has been a faculty member at MSU for eight years.
Phillip Steele, professor in forest products in the College of Forest Resources, received the Research Award in honor of his numerous patents, consistent publication record and nationally recognized bioenergy research. He has worked at MSU for more than 26 years.
Louise Davis, Extension professor in child development and director of the Mississippi Child Care Resource and Referral Network, received the Extension and Outreach Award. Her work in the early child care and education field has been replicated in several other states and Puerto Rico, and she has been awarded several million dollars in external grant funds. Davis has worked at MSU for 18 years.
Keith Coble, Giles Distinguished Professor in agricultural economics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, received the Service Award for his past and present involvement in numerous professional associations on state, regional, national and international levels, as well as his community service. He has worked at MSU for 16 years.
Dr. Henry Wan, associate professor in the Department of Basic Sciences at MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, received the International Award in recognition of his extensive research collaborations across the globe and international reputation as an influenza research expert. He has worked at MSU for four years.
“I am very proud of our faculty for their work in all five areas recognized,” said Greg Bohach, vice president for the Division. “This recognition would not be possible without Regions Bank support.”
Regions Bank pledged a $50,000 gift over five years to support these major faculty awards given in recognition of exemplary work supporting MSU’s mission and goals. Every year, with additional funds from the vice president’s office for program support, each winner will receive a $2,500 award.
“The support from Regions Bank is critical and deeply appreciated as the Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine recognizes the outstanding efforts and contributions of our excellent faculty,” said Bill Herndon, associate vice president for the Division. “These prestigious awards allow us to acknowledge the tremendous talents and hard work of these professors.”
Representatives from Regions Bank on-hand for the awards presentation were Alan Sims, Regions senior vice president for agribusiness; Walt Stephens, Regions community bank and agriculture relations manager; and Brad Jones, Starkville city vice president.
