Traffic changes announced, safety encouraged
As Mississippi State begins the fall semester, university officials are encouraging students, employees and community members to be mindful of the high traffic volume, along with road closures and new directional changes due to construction. "We're encouraging students and all others to take some time to familiarize themselves with the current layout of the campus," said Dan Whatley, MSU construction administrator. "We also want employees and those from the local communities to be aware of updates and changes that have been made during the summer."
Energy efficiency garners national recognition
Mississippi State is being honored by a national publication for its facility maintenance decisions resulting in more than $20 million in savings over seven years from decreased energy consumption. J.D. Hardy, associate director of utilities in MSU's campus services organization, said the land-grant institution is being recognized for its major sustainability and energy efficiency efforts.
Register now for Argonne National Lab Day
On Sept. 9-10, Mississippi State University will host officials from one of the world’s leading research facilities. During the two-day visit, MSU faculty, staff, administrators and students will have opportunities to meet with Argonne National Laboratory leaders and researchers and explore partnership and funding possibilities, among other topics. The registration deadline is Aug. 26.
Welcome Center offers new employee tours, more
The Welcome Center is the front door to Mississippi State University. Not only does the center and its staff assist visitors with questions and directions, but they also provide a centralized location for distribution of MSU and community publications, and offer customized tours to guests and employees.
Library's 'Think Tank' available to faculty, staff
A new meeting room on the third floor of Mitchell Memorial Library now is open to provide faculty, staff and students with a technology-filled space designed to enhance collaborative learning and research. Presentation Room 3060 -- also known as "The Think Tank" -- will accommodate up to eight individuals. It is designed specifically for small-group meetings, Blackboard Collaborate and other web-based conference activities, group training, search committee meetings requiring Skype, and presentation practices.
P.R.E.P/Emergency Preparedness Week next month
Will your family be prepared when disaster strikes? Learn from the experts in disaster preparedness. The MSU Campus-Community Emergency Response Team (C-CERT) and the Maroon Volunteer Center are hosting Emergency Preparedness Week from Sept. 16-21, offering free disaster preparedness training sessions that are open to all students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Volunteer to help teach art at the Boys and Girls Club
The Maroon Volunteer Center at Mississippi State details a number of volunteer opportunities for the campus community in its current newsletter, including volunteer art teachers at the Boys and Girls Club, Bridges Out of Poverty graduation ceremony, and Peter's Rock Food Pantry.

Cross Country travels to Tennessee for the Memphis Twilight Cross Country Classic on Friday... Soccer is on the road to Fort Myers, Fla., for a Friday game against Florida Atlantic at 3:30 p.m., and then a Sunday match with Florida Gulf Coast at noon. Volleyball hosts the Maroon Classic with a match at 1 p.m. against Southeast Missouri State and at 7 p.m. against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday, and then a 1 p.m. match against UALR and at 7 p.m. against Southeast Missouri on Saturday... Football opens the 2013 season against Oklahoma State in Texas at Houston's Reliant Stadium (ABC/ESPN2) on Saturday.
