Biosafety workshop series: Module two offered this Friday

The Office of Regulatory Compliance and Safety's three-module biosafety workshop series continues with the second and third sessions coming up in November and December.

Module two will be held Friday, Nov. 18 from 1:30-3 p.m. in 117 Hill Poultry Science Building. The third session takes place Friday, Dec. 2 from 1:30-3 p.m. in the same location. The opening session was held Oct. 28.

The course will consists of three stand-alone modules that cover risk assessment, principles of biocontainment, biological safety cabinets and other equipment, decontamination, biohazardous waste management, emergency response and biosecurity. The goal of the live workshops is to provide an overview of biosafety principles and practices.

Each module may be taken individually. However, a certificate of achievement will only be awarded after completion of all three.

The two remaining sessions in the series are:

Module 2: Effective Use of BSCs
Commonly used ventilation equipment including Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) will be discussed. BSCs are one of the most important primary containment barriers for personnel working with biohazardous materials. The differences between BSCs and other laminar flow type cabinets will be discussed. After completion of the module, participants will understand the way BSCs function to protect personnel, products and the environment; how to prepare for working in a BSC; and how to work safely in a BSC and how to clean up when work has been completed. Participants will also be able to identify the other types of laminar flow ventilation equipment and their uses.

Module 3: Biosafety Operations
This module will review the transportation and decontamination of biohazardous material, waste handling, emergency response (spill and personnel contamination) and biosecurity. After completion of the module, participants will be familiar with the handling of biohazardous material outside of the lab; be able to determine the most appropriate disinfectant for a particular agent; handle emergencies involving biohazardous material; and understand the importance of securing material from loss, theft or intentional misuse.
