Penn State vice provost to speak on campus Thursday

Blannie Bowen, the vice provost for academic affairs at Penn State, will deliver a keynote address at Thursday’s [Sept. 4] campus-wide meeting -- “The Scholarship and Evaluation of Teaching” -- at 2 p.m. in the Hunter Henry Center Parker Ballroom at Mississippi State University.
All faculty are invited and encouraged to attend.
During his address, “The Scholarship of Teaching and Its Role in the Promotion and Tenure Process,” Bowen will discuss Penn State’s 20-year journey to better integrate research, teaching and service.
Included will be a discussion of how Penn State evaluates Extension faculty for promotion and tenure. Much of the current scholarship model at Penn State was shaped by the UniSCOPE 2000 model, which was utilized starting in 1998 to frame a discussion by faculty and administration on the continuum of scholarship.
Bowen has served as vice provost for academic affairs at Penn State since 2004. Before that appointment, he served as department head of agricultural and extension education at Penn State. His research interest is in agricultural education with special attention to the participation of African Americans in that field. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in agricultural education from North Carolina A&T University and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.
