Fulbright Ambassador visiting campus Friday
The International Institute at Mississippi State University will host Fulbright Ambassador Rachel Stevens for a visit on Friday from 2-3:30 p.m. in Colvard Student Union, Room 324. A professor in the art department at New Mexico State University, Stevens will provide an overview to U.S. citizen faculty and administrators holding terminal degrees who are interested in competing for a U.S. Department of State Fulbright scholarship.

University Health Services: Get the shot — not the flu
University Health Services at Mississippi State reminds students, faculty and staff to get the flu shot -- not the flu. A series of clinics offering flu shots will be offered on campus this fall, including one this Tuesday in room 125 of Thompson Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Wednesday in the third floor classroom of the Student Health Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Diversity & Equity Programs launches series
In an effort to build on the momentum gained from hosting the Human Capital: Enhancing the Academic Achievement of Men of Color Summit in August, Mississippi State University’s Office of Diversity and Equity Programs is launching a series of conference calls and webinars to connect students, alumni, faculty, staff, subject matter experts and other stakeholders. The first speaker, MSU alumnus James E. Pattman, will conduct a session on Tuesday from 7-8 p.m.

Indiana University prof next speaker in series
Political science professor Aurelian Craiutu is the next speaker in Mississippi State's Institute for the Humanities Distinguished Lecture Series. His Wednesday presentation in the McCool Hall Atrium will be titled "In Praise of a Forgotten Virtue: Moderation in the Twenty-First Century." Open to all, the event will begin at 4 p.m., followed by a reception and book signing.

Diehl's photography earns prestigious recognition
A hungry polar bear paddles through icy Arctic waters to get to the ice pack and hunt for seals. A Mississippi State University amateur photographer snaps a shot. That picture, taken in 2011 has become an Internet sensation by being named a finalist in the National Geographic Expeditions 2012 Photo Contest. By day, Walter Diehl is an MSU professor of biological sciences, associate dean for research and graduate studies for the College of Arts and Sciences. When he leaves campus to travel around the world, Diehl is taking photographs of animals, landscapes, architecture and ruins.

Poss named MSU HPC2 strategic initiatives director
A senior United States Air Force officer is returning home to the Magnolia State where he will be joining Mississippi State University after his retirement from active service. Ocean Springs native Maj. Gen. James O. Poss will begin his new duties as director of strategic initiatives in the High Performance Computing Collaboratory at the land-grant institution in December.

MSU Extension project wins national award
The Mississippi State University Extension Service recently gained national recognition for a program designed to protect the state’s timberlands from an insect pest. The Mississippi Southern Pine Beetle Prevention Program received the 2012 Family Forests Education Award at the Society of American Foresters’ national convention, held in Spokane, Wash. Andy Londo, a research and Extension professor in MSU’s Forest and Wildlife Research Center and Extension forestry coordinator, said he nominated the program for the award because no other university in the country does anything like it.
