Proposals sought for cross-college research teams
The Office of Research and Economic Development at Mississippi State is again soliciting proposals from MSU faculty who desire to create interdisciplinary, cross-college research groups on campus. These grants will be in the amount of $2,000 each, and are intended to facilitate interdisciplinary interaction between faculty and students that have a common research theme. Proposals must be submitted by this Friday.
University Health Services: Get the shot — not the flu
University Health Services at Mississippi State reminds students, faculty and staff to get the flu shot -- not the flu. A series of clinics offering flu shots will be offered on campus this fall, including one this Wednesday in the Herbert Hall lobby from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Theatre MSU season opens Wednesday night
Theatre MSU at Mississippi State begins its 2012-13 season with the Wednesday through Friday student production of "Antigone." The 7:30 p.m. performances in McComas Hall Auditorium are directed by university communication professor Donna Clevinger. They are part of the Shackouls Honors College's "Classical Week 2012," a celebration of Greek, Roman and other ancient cultures.
Maroon Madness set for downtown Starkville Friday
New Mississippi State basketball coaches Rick Ray and Vic Schaefer are taking Maroon Madness to the street this year. The Mississippi State men's and women's basketball teams officially open their 2013 basketball campaigns with the 2nd Annual Maroon Madness to be held in downtown Starkville on Friday in conjunction with Pumpkinpalooza, the city's fall festival that features trick-or-treating, late-night shopping and dining and other action-packed events for the entire family.
MSU hosting 5K race for United Way Oct. 30
The local community is invited to help support Mississippi State University’s United Way campaign by running or walking Bully’s 5K for United Way. Race day fun begins Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m. with registration at McArthur Hall on the MSU campus. The race starts at 6:30 p.m.“We have the same course as prior years, but have changed the day and time,” said race director Les Potts. “We plan on having a lot of fun with a twilight race with plenty of glow sticks and a new Halloween theme.”
EcoCAR 2 team recognized at energy summit
Mississippi State University's EcoCAR 2 Team was recognized during Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant's Energy Summit in Jackson last Thursday for excellence in alternative vehicle design. The team was greeted by summit keynote speaker and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Jack shares catfish expertise in Nigeria
Commercially grown catfish in North America or Africa face similar challenges, a fact that sent one Mississippi State University veterinarian on a training mission to Nigeria in June. Dr. Skip Jack, a professor of pathobiology and population medicine at MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, spent almost three weeks teaching Nigerian catfish farmers, veterinarians and students about health issues related to their fish. He was part of the Farmer to Farmer project, teaching under the oversight of the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Volunteer for United Way and One Million Bones
The Maroon Volunteer Center at Mississippi State details a number of volunteer opportunities for the campus community in its current newsletter, including United Way envelope stuffing, Maroon Edition Habitat for Humanity, Make A Difference Day, MS BEST Robotics, One Million Bones, and much more.
Policy addresses employee political activity
With political campaigns for the White House and other federal offices well underway for the Nov. 6 general election, Mississippi State's Office of General Counsel reminds employees to be aware of the university's policy on political activities. There are several basic guidelines that university employees should keep in mind when engaging in any form of political activity.
Open enrollment for benefits Oct. 1-24
Benefits open enrollment at Mississippi State will be held from Oct. 1 through Oct. 24. During the open enrollment period, MSU employees may add new benefits coverage, change existing coverage, or cancel coverage. All open enrollment benefits elections are effective on Jan. 1, 2013. If you do not want to make changes, your benefits will automatically roll over for 2013 and no action is required to remain enrolled in coverage.
