Computer science, engineering attract Fulbrights
Since arriving at Mississippi State as a graduate student, Ibrahim Abdoulahi typically runs about 10 miles for exercise each Saturday morning. But the distance he travels with a local running club pales compared to the thousands of miles he traveled from his African home in the Republic of Niger to study as a Fulbright Scholar in the United States. Abdoulahi is among three international graduate students who met a year ago as fellow Fulbright students at MSU's department of computer science and engineering in the Bagley College of Engineering.

Plant collection blooms in Maddox's garden
A Mississippi State University researcher's lifelong fascination with plants inspired him to collect thousands of specimens from all over the globe. Then, Victor Maddox, a scientist in the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, created his own Garden of Eden on nine acres near Maben.

CVM open house attracts almost 4,000 visitors
The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine's open house attracted almost 4,000 visitors on April 13 and 14. The open house offered hands-on activities, such as a petting zoo and a microscope station, as well as guided tours and educational exhibits and presentations on veterinary science and animal safety. Gary J. Burt, assistant clinical professor and director of the Animal Health Center, said the CVM students were largely responsible for planning and hosting the open house.

Baker named Lady Bulldogs' director of operations
Vic Schaefer's Mississippi State women's basketball coaching staff continues to grow as former Texas A&M standout Maryann Baker has joined the program as director of operations. Baker spent last season as an intern with the Aggies' squad that advanced to the Sweet 16 and finished the year 24-11 and No. 12 in the final USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll.

Baseball plays Southern Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and then opens a home SEC weekend series against Ole Miss at 7 p.m. on Friday... Softball hosts Memphis on Tuesday at 6 p.m., and a double-header with Tennessee Tech on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., as well as playing Southern Miss on the road in Hattiesburg at 6 p.m. Wednesday... Track and Field begins competition at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., on Thursday.

Herrmann's project selected for national exhibition
A project developed by a Mississippi State School of Architecture faculty member is being featured in an American Institute of Architects exhibition in Washington, D.C. Hans C. Herrmann, an assistant professor at the university, was selected by his professional peers to display the "Valley Retreat" residential project at the Annual Emerging Professionals Exhibition.
Murray's book joins prestigious list
A 2008 book by a retired English department faculty member at Mississippi State University is being honored by the American Library Association. Meg McGavran Murray's "Margaret Fuller, Wandering Pilgrim" is receiving the organization's Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Title.
Contributions to education earn kudos for ORED
The Office of Research and Economic Development at Mississippi State University has been recognized for its work to enhance opportunities for students and educators in the Magnolia State. ORED received a Partnership Award from the Program of Research and Evaluation of Public Schools at its recent statewide conference in Jackson.
Bagley 'spirit,' publications earn statewide honors
The state public relations association got a dose of Bagley spirit earlier this month when the college of engineering's publications and homecoming tailgate event, including the Spirit-O-Meter, earned recognition at its annual conference in Columbus. During the Public Relations Association of Mississippi's 2012 PRism Awards, the Bagley College of Engineering publications and communications staff received three awards.
