Pannell, RCU shine at national conference
Myra Pannell, an instructional design specialist at Mississippi State Univeristy's Research and Curriculum Unit, was recognized recently at the Association for Career and Technical Education's annual convention and career tech expo with the 2011 Service Award by the Engineering and Technology Education Division.
Lance honored with inaugural award
Mississippi State University Director of Bands Elva Kaye Lance is being honored with the first Edythe McArthur Outstanding Director Award. Given by the Mississippi Bandmasters Association during its recent state clinic in Natchez, the honor is a memorial to the longtime state band director who died in 2009.
Diehl delivering High Arctic presentation Tuesday
Walter Diehl, associate dean for research for the College of Arts and Sciences and professor in Biological Sciences at Mississippi State, will present "10 Random Thoughts from the High Arctic" during Cafe Scientifique's meeting Tuesday at Harvey's, which begins at 6 p.m.
English announces Hargrove literary contests
A widely recognized former member of Mississippi State's English faculty is continuing her lifelong mission of service to the university. Nancy D. Hargrove of Starkville, a William L. Giles Professor Emerita, is funding a twice-yearly literary contest organized through the university's national literary journal, Jabberwock Review.
MSU Riley Center announces spring/summer series
Music lovers of all kinds will find something to enjoy in the MSU Riley Center's 2012 Spring/Summer Performing Arts Series, which kicks off March 9. "This season offers an entertaining mix of classic, well-known musicians along with hot new artists and unique pairings," said executive director Dennis Sankovich.
Recruiting, retaining diverse faculty sessions on tap
Mississippi State University's Office of Diversity and Equity Programs, along with the Center for Teaching and Learning, will sponsor a two-part webcast offering suggestions on how to recruit and retain diverse faculty. The first session takes place Tuesday.
Healthy Starkville taking applications for grants
The Healthy Starkville Committee has announced details of $25,000 in cash grants that will be used by community organizations to promote healthy activities and lifestyles. "The purpose is to kick start healthy activities, programs and services in the greater Starkville area, including the Mississippi State campus," said Healthy Starkville chair Alyson Karges.
Register now for February PERS workshop
Human Resources Management at Mississippi State is sponsoring a Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) workshop on Feb. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Bost Extension Center on the Starkville campus. The workshop is free for university employees, but pre-registration is required.
Nominations open for outstanding women awards
An annual awards program sponsored by the President's Commission on the Status of Women at Mississippi State will recognize exceptional women across all employment categories. Nominations are being accepted until Feb. 21 for the 2012 Outstanding Women Awards.
Faculty invited to Fulbright information session
Fulbright Ambassador Charles A. Johnson, senior vice president for research at Texas A&M University, will visit Mississippi State on Feb. 14 to support the university's growing Fulbright faculty program.
Retirewise workshop set for late February
Mississippi State University Human Resources Management and MetLife are offering Retirewise on campus in late February. The free four-part program is designed to help people feel more confident about retirement.
Recycling change: No more glass in bins, please
Mississippi State's single-stream recycling program has now been in place for more than a year. The program has fundamentally changed the way the university collects recyclables and trash on campus. However, due to a contractor change, MSU can no longer collect glass as part of the recycling stream.
