CoSIDA honoring Dier during June convention
Joe Dier
Joe Dier, a mainstay in Mississippi State athletics since 1978, will be recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) this June for his 25 years of exceptional service to college athletic communications.
Dier, 58, has been affiliated with Mississippi State athletics and MSU baseball since 1978 -- eight years as editor of the sports publication Dawgs' Bite and since 1986 as a member of the MSU Athletics Department staff. Dier followed two CoSIDA Hall of Famers, the late Bob Hartley (inaugural class), and Bo Carter (2005) as MSU's third full-time sports information director in November, 1986, serving as the primary media contact for all 15 Mississippi State sports.
He is currently in his 14th season as the primary media relations contact for Mississippi State baseball and volleyball.
"Joe is a true media relations professional, in every sense of the word," Mike Nemeth, senior associate athletics director of media relations and corporate development, said. "He has a deep love for Mississippi State and has dedicated his professional life to serving others, administrators, his coaches and student-athletes, and the news media."
Dier coordinated media activities for MSU's appearance in the 1991 Liberty Bowl has served as media coordinator for five MSU-hosted NCAA regional baseball tournaments. He was named to the board of directors of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) in 2005 and in 2008-09 served as the organization's president. He is also a charter member of the MSU Chapter of the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame. He also previously served as the sports editor at two Mississippi newspapers, the Yazoo City Daily Herald and the Starkville Daily News.
Dier is a native of Baton Rouge, La., and a 1975 graduate of Mississippi State University. The son of a career Air Force chaplain, he traveled extensively in his youth, following family military assignments in Washington, British Columbia, Oregon, Alabama, Florida, Okinawa, Mississippi and Alaska.
He is married to the former Kim Monroe of Starkville and they are the parents of a son, Reed Burton, a junior at Mississippi State University.
