Prakash Jha, an assistant professor in Mississippi State University’s Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, has been named the recipient of the Early Career Award from the Mississippi Academy of Sciences, one of the largest scientific organizations in the state.

The award recognizes faculty members within eight years of earning their doctoral degrees who have demonstrated significant impact in research, mentorship and teaching. Jha was selected from a competitive pool of nominees representing all eight of Mississippi’s public institutions of higher learning and a wide range of scientific disciplines, from agriculture and chemistry to mathematics and entomology. He will be honored at the organization’s annual conference, March 19–20 in Biloxi, where he will receive the award.

Jha said mentorship has played a central role in his professional philosophy and success.

“My role as a young professional is to prepare the next generation of science leaders,” he said. “I run a unique program in the department called the Career Café, where graduate students can come together to practice career readiness by learning to apply for jobs or build a CV while developing their professional and personal network.”

He added that the recognition reflects not only his own efforts, but also the collaborative work with colleagues, mentors, and students who have supported him along the way, in line with the broader mission and impact of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the university as a whole.

“While I am thrilled to have been named a recipient, I know my work is far from over,” he said. “I have a responsibility to build upon this legacy, inspiring those around me to continue their diligence and to think outside of their comfort zone, even considering global collaboration, which has been such a meaningful part of the work I do.”

As a scientist at the university’s Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, Jha’s research focuses on climate-resilient agricultural solutions integrating crops and climate modeling, geospatial soil health and digital agriculture.
