Gholson elected to national water resources board

Drew Gholson
Drew Gholson, associate professor at Mississippi State, has been elected to serve on the board of directors for the University Council of Water Resources, or UCOWR.
Gholson, who is an associate professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, said the appointment will help him further his goals to address critical water issues and support the next generation of water resource professionals.
“During my term, I hope to advance UCOWR’s goals by promoting greater collaboration between research, education and extension efforts, particularly in areas like agricultural water management, sustainability and addressing regional water scarcity issues,” he said. “I’d like to support initiatives that engage early-career professionals and students, strengthen partnerships across member institutions and help UCOWR continue to be a leader in interdisciplinary water resources for universities and other institutions.”
Gholson, who also serves as an irrigation specialist with the MSU Extension Service and a scientist in the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, said his selection by the organization’s representatives from member institutions across the country is an honor that recognizes the importance of the work taking place at MSU.
“This role means a lot to me personally, as it provides an opportunity to contribute at a national level to an organization that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration on critical water challenges. I’m proud to bring perspectives from Mississippi and the Mid-South region to the table,” he said.
His duties, which began in 2025, will include collaboration on initiatives like their annual conference, journal and overall membership growth. He will serve on the board for three years with the option to seek re-election for a second term.
