Lab notebook do's and don'ts on agenda Wednesday
If your research led to a fantastic discovery, and you were asked to prove that the research was actually yours, could you do it?
As part of its Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training, the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) at Mississippi State University will provide a two-hour session on "The Do's and Don'ts of Keeping an MSU Lab Notebook" on Wednesday, March 21 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Colvard Student Union's Fowlkes Auditorium.
Animal Research Director Lucy Senter and OETT Associate Director Chase Kasper are presenters for the session.
A lab notebook is the primary method of determining the authenticity and credibility of your research. Your lab notebook is also a methodology roadmap for someone else to follow and get the same results. This seminar will present the proper way to document your research so that you can take credit for your work and to ensure that using your methodology, the same results could be obtained by anyone.
Legal aspects of patenting a process or invention will also be discussed and the importance of a well-kept lab notebook so that other researchers and their patent lawyers will not beat you to the Patent Office -- or to the bank.
Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to attend this session. Examples will be provided and topics will include good lab practice (GLP), intellectual property, patents, data ownership, confidentiality and more.
