Research shows that children who receive early developmental support are more likely to succeed later in life. For families in Mississippi seeking guidance and resources for their young children, the Mississippi LIFT Resource and Referral Network through the Mississippi State University Extension Service provides a place to turn. Through centers like the Midtown Jackson Resource & Referral (R&R) Center, parents and caregivers gain access to educational tools, expert support, and a community that prioritizes early learning.

At the heart of this effort is Alexis Brookins, who is committed to empowering families and educators.

“I work with families to educate them on the resources we have to offer. A lot of people aren’t aware of the resources available, so partnering with others to spread the word is empowering,” she said.

Brookins helps parents navigate childcare options, supports workforce development and connects with organizations advocating for children’s well-being.

The R&R Center offers an extensive selection of free materials—including infant and toddler toys, STEM tools, mini libraries, dramatic play materials, and manipulatives—ensuring that children have access to enriching, developmentally appropriate activities. Families can borrow these materials for up to two weeks. Additionally, the center provides essential services like free lamination, bulletin paper, arts and crafts supplies, a die-cutting machine and daily copies to support caregivers and educators.

“I love to interact with the children. One of my favorite memories on the job was reading books to toddlers at a nearby childcare center,” Brookins said.

Beyond providing resources, she values brainstorming with families to find solutions, celebrating their successes, and maintaining meaningful relationships.

By supporting parents and educators, the MSU Extension Service’s MS LIFT Resource & Referral Centers -- through the dedication of individuals like Brookins -- are laying the foundation for a brighter future. When families have access to the right tools and guidance, children thrive, setting them on a path to lifelong success.
