DAFVM Spotlight Employee: Brittany Adams
Brittany Adams
ICU Technician I
College of Veterinary Medicine
Years in Position/Service to MSU: 8
In an ICU setting -- whether for humans or animals -- you never know what each day will bring. For Brittany Adams, an ICU Technician in the Small Animal ICU/ER at Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), an environment where you can expect the unexpected is what makes it both challenging and rewarding.
Adams’ daily responsibilities span a wide range, from caring for chest tubes and administering medications to ensuring patients meet their caloric needs and are as comfortable as possible. She also plays a critical role in triaging incoming patients, collaborating with students and other technicians on diagnostics such as bloodwork, ultrasonography and radiographs.
The ICU/ER environment often calls for lifesaving measures for patients in critical condition. This could involve administering urgent medications, placing catheters for fluids or coordinating a team to perform CPR. Despite the demanding workload, Adams and her team thrive in the dynamic nature of their work, providing top-notch care to patients on some of their hardest days.
For Adams, the most rewarding part of her job is seeing the patients she’s cared for return home with their families.
“Seeing our patients make progress and knowing we’ve made a difference -- it’s a feeling like no other,” she said.
Her best memories aren’t tied to a single moment but are instead built around the heartfelt “thank yous” she’s received, whether from clients, faculty, or colleagues. Adams recalled thoughtful gestures like snacks, meals or small tokens of appreciation that brighten her and her team’s day.
“It brings a smile to all of our faces, makes the day a little brighter, and we’re always grateful,” she said.
Adams discovered her passion for veterinary medicine early on. Though she initially knew she wanted to work in the medical field, it wasn’t until high school -- when she began volunteering at a local animal shelter -- that she found her calling. This experience inspired her to pursue Veterinary Medical Technology at Mississippi State University. After graduating, she joined the CVM team and has been making an impact ever since.
At the end of a long day, her favorite pastime is spending time with her animals and unwinding before preparing for another uniquely unpredictable day in the ICU.
