Mississippi State University is beginning an international education collaboration with Brazil’s Universidade de Rio Verde after the signing of a joint agreement last month.

MSU Provost and Executive Vice President David Shaw and UniRV President Alberto Barella Netto penned their signatures on a memorandum of understanding, officially acknowledging the academic alliance between the two institutions, on Nov. 19.

“We’ve made a strong commitment through our strategic plan to develop partnerships for new academic offerings and experiential learning experiences for our students, and this relationship helps us in realizing these goals,” Shaw said. “The agreement also includes an expansion of programs for faculty, staff and student researchers, opening even more doors to collaborative efforts in solving not only local, but global challenges.”

Along with development of academic program and research opportunities, the document includes strong support for both universities to work together on desirable study abroad options that reflect “the missions and mutual commitment to international education, research and service.”

Shaw said, “The rich history and culture in Brazil and here at home make this a great chance for students to explore additional traditions, languages and ways of life.”

Universidade de Rio Verde was established in 1973 in the small Brazilian city of Rio Verde. With three branch locations, the public institution offers courses and programs leading to bachelor’s and master’s degrees in many similar areas as MSU such as engineering, arts and humanities, and health.
