Mississippi State University’s Graduate School honored four outstanding faculty and staff members for their exceptional contributions to graduate education at the annual Graduate Coordinator Workshop held on September 25.

The “Excellence in Service” awards recognize individuals who have demonstrated exemplary service in their roles as advocates and leaders within their respective departments.

The Graduate Coordinator Workshop is an annual event aimed at informing faculty and staff of updates to graduate school policies and fostering professional development. In recent years, the workshop has become an opportunity to celebrate the often-unsung efforts of coordinators who work diligently to ensure the success of graduate programs at MSU.

Associate Dean of the Graduate School W. Brien Henry said, “These individuals have gone above and beyond in their service to our students and faculty. We are proud to celebrate their achievements and thank them for their unwavering commitment to excellence.”

This year’s recipients include two faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences, a staff member from CAS and a staff member from the Bagley College of Engineering.

Faculty honorees:

Melody Fisher, graduate coordinator in the Department of Communication, was recognized for her leadership and dedication to student success. “Dr. Fisher has been a strong advocate for students throughout her tenure, providing crucial support and guidance. She has gone above and beyond as an MSU spokesperson for diversity and access when speaking to McNair Scholars and our most recent group of outstanding TRIO students from Memphis,” Henry said.

Kevin Armstrong, graduate coordinator for the Department of Psychology, was celebrated for his years of service in supporting students, particularly in times of adversity. “Dr. Armstrong is always the strongest advocate for the students if ever they run into problems or difficulties. He has spent long hours as the leader of one of our Graduate Task Forces and his superior guidance and leadership helps us function at peak capacity,” Henry said.

Staff honorees:

Quintara Miller, business coordinator for the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, received the award for her exceptional advisory work and student advocacy. “Known for her quick responses and creative problem-solving, Ms. Miller is well-respected by her colleagues and students alike. Quintara maintains clear and effective communication and brings a sense of fun to the workplace. Her award is well-deserved,” said Nathan Drake, director of the Public Administration program.

Tamra Swann, distance education coordinator for the Bagley College of Engineering, was also recognized for her dedication to enhancing the experience of graduate students pursuing distance education. “Tamra Swann is a valuable resource for faculty, staff and students in BCOE. She goes above to help online students navigate Graduate School from start to finish as well as serves as an essential liaison between the Graduate School and the department. Her positive attitude and dedication make her a true delight to work with,” said Henry.
