DAFVM Spotlight Employee: Mallory Pitts

Mallory Pitts

Veterinary Technician
MSU College of Veterinary Medicine
Time at MSU/in Position: 2 years

The day Mallory Pitts has been anticipating since childhood is just a few weeks away. This June, she will begin the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Mississippi State University.

“It’s surreal; that’s the only way to describe it,” said Pitts. “It’s been a long road and has taken a lot of patience, but it’s in the Lord’s timing.

Since graduating from the veterinary technology program at CVM in 2021, Pitts has worked as a vet tech at the MSU Animal Health Center in the neurology department. In her position, she assists veterinarians and students with patient care including physical exams and administering anesthesia.

“Veterinary medicine has been a passion of mine from an early age,” Pitts said. “Growing up the daughter of an MSU alum as well as a graduate of our College of Veterinary Medicine [Dr. Daryl Pitts], I had a front-row seat to working at a veterinary clinic."

"I fell in love with veterinary medicine and being an advocate for our patients, as well as educating the community on public health. From working in cow pastures to assisting with small animals, I knew this was what I was meant to do and am so grateful that dream is finally coming true," said Pitts.

Although caring for animals is why she loves her job, Pitts said her favorite memory from her experience as a vet tech is the friendships and connections she’s made with her co-workers at both the Animal Health Center and the Veterinary Specialty Center.

“They are all a part of my support system. My family is so supportive, but it will be so nice to have people here that I can rely on, as well,” said Pitts.

“I believe empathy is the most important trait for being a professional in this industry. Part of our job is guiding owners through difficult decisions and conversations regarding their pets, often considered family members. I aim for each of my clients to see me as a safe space while their pet is in our care,” Pitts explained.

When she isn’t in the office, Pitts enjoys traveling, being outdoors with her family in her hometown of Waynesboro, playing the piano, and attending First Baptist Church of Starkville.
