Although born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Jacky Peraza’s pursuit of an ophthalmology specialty in veterinary medicine brought her to Mississippi State University in July 2022. As a first-year ophthalmology resident at the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, her work includes teaching students and educating clients about various eye diseases.
“It’s nice to be able to work as a team with the students and see them grow to become independent doctors,” said Peraza. “Another aspect of my job that I love is interacting with clients. It is a wonderful experience getting to know them and building a bond with them and their pets,” Peraza said
Peraza recalls her favorite memory on the job being able to perform her first conjunctival graft surgery on a Shih Tzu/Terrier mix named Sophia, who had a deep ulcer that needed extra assistance in healing.
“It’s amazing how much an eye can tell you about the overall systemic health of an animal. I also enjoy that we are able to diagnose most diseases right on the spot by utilizing simple diagnostics and looking at the internal structures of the eye with our slit lamp,” she explained.
In Peraza’s line of work, ophthalmology offers a unique experience in working with a variety of species, even zoo animals, a personal interest for Peraza.
She believes one of the most important traits to be successful in veterinary medicine is to be patient with yourself and others.
“It’s important not to take things too personally and always have a hobby to help de-stress after work. Additionally, being empathetic, detail-oriented and organized are also very good traits,” said Peraza.
Peraza is a proud first-generation college student. Her mother and father emigrated to the U.S. when they were 6 and 13, respectively. She is a Harry Potter fan and enjoys listening to rock, heavy metal, and alternative genres. She has a Shih Tzu mix, “Picollo,” and two cats, “Myrtle” and “Butternut.”
