Hwang's research to be featured on brochure cover
Joonsik Hwang
The Coalition for Advanced Scientific Computation has recognized the research of a Mississippi State University Bagley College of Engineering faculty member.
Joonsik Hwang, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is the winner of a competition held by the Coalition for Advanced Scientific Computation. The prize? Hwang's image will grace the cover of CASC's annual brochure highlighting research activities utilizing advanced computing at some of its member institutions.
To support its mission, CASC develops an annual brochure highlighting research activities utilizing advanced computing at some of its member institutions. Each year a competition is held to determine which member is selected for the brochure cover.
The brochure cover will feature a Combustion Engine CFD image from Hwang's work on reducing CO2 emissions. The image caption is: "Supercritical spray velocity contour - Engine Combustion Network Spray A under ambient pressure of 60 bar and temperature of 900K".
The CASC is an organization of 93 institutions representing the nation's most forward-thinking universities and computing centers. The mission of CASC is to advocate for the importance of and the need for public and private research investment in research computing and data services to support academic research; serve as a trusted advisor to federal agencies on the direction of relevant funding programs; actively engage in discussions of policies related to research computing and data services; foster advancement of a robust and diverse community of current and emerging leaders in this field; and provide a forum for the community to share strategic ideas and best practices. Mississippi State is a member of the coalition through its HPC2 lab.
Hwang received his bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Daejeon, Republic of Korea. His research interests include:
-- Compression/spark ignition engines, alternative fuels
-- Advanced combustion
-- Soot particle morphology by transmission electron microscopy
-- High-speed optical diagnostics and 3D tomographic reconstruction of turbulent spray flame
-- Computational fluid dynamics simulation of internal/external fuel flow
