A recent partnership with FOX News Media will benefit students studying meteorology in Mississippi State University’s Department of Geosciences through newly created scholarship opportunities.
The commitment from FOX Weather, a network subsidiary, has established the FOX Weather Endowed Scholarship and the FOX Weather Annual Scholarship to further increase diversity and expand opportunities for academic success in the field of meteorology.
Candidates for the awards will be full-time undergraduate students pursuing a degree in the geosciences department of the MSU College of Arts and Sciences who have earned a minimum 3.0 grade-point average. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors who have elected a concentration in broadcast meteorology or professional meteorology/climatology.
In addition to the scholarship, FOX Weather also will provide an internship position along with a dedicated mentor for recipients throughout their college experience. The inaugural FOX Weather scholarship recipient will be awarded for the 2022-23 academic year.
“FOX Weather is proud to partner with Mississippi State University to help deserving students fulfill their aspirations, while increasing diversity, equity and inclusion in the field of meteorology,” said FOX Weather President Sharri Berg.
FOX Weather, which launched last month, is a 24/7 ad-supported streaming service operated by FOX News Media. The platform builds upon the network’s expansive newsgathering units and television stations’ added resources with a combined 120 meteorologists for a comprehensive suite of weather products. FOX Weather’s Mississippi State University graduates amount to 40 and counting, including on-air meteorologists Steve Bender, Janice Dean, Jason Frazer, Amy Freeze, Craig Herrera, Nick Kosir, Rick Reichmuth and Kendall Smith.
Demonstrating a long-term strength in the field of broadcast meteorology, MSU has graduated the largest number of degree-holding weathercasters nationwide. The renowned research led by MSU’s Department of Geosciences also contributed to the university’s designation as a Center of Academic Excellence in Geospatial Sciences by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Geological Survey in 2015.
