Mississippi State University Assistant Research Professor Mark Woodrey was recently selected for a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Regional Director’s Honor Award. He received the award for his work with the Gulf of Mexico Avian Monitoring Network (GoMAMN).

The 19-year MSU veteran is a scientist in the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station stationed at the Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi. He specializes in the ecology and conservation of coastal birds.

GoMAMN was founded as a response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill’s impact on avian habitats along the northern Gulf Coast. Prior to the development of GoMAMN, a net-work of conservation partners along the northern Gulf of Mexico, there were no consistent methods for estimating bird populations along the northern Gulf of Mexico. As one of the cofounders of GoMAMN, Woodrey co-led the development of a consistent approach to avian population monitoring that allows for improved and expanded research.

“This prestigious award is a reflection of the Gulf of Mexico Avian Monitoring Network partnership and the amazing colleagues and collaborators who helped shape and build this dynamic conservation effort,” Woodrey said.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service Regional Director’s Honor Award is given annually to a select group of individuals who have made significant contributions to the mission and vision of the service in the South Atlantic-Gulf and Mississippi Basin Interior Regions.
