Kiersten Combs had been working in graphic design for eight years before she was offered a job at the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine assisting in creating visually appealing and communicative graphics.
She works on the C.A.L.F. Stewardship project, Risk Project Blog, Population Medicine Rotation, and many other projects.
Her favorite aspect of her job is the overall atmosphere of working in the vet school. She grew up in a farming community and was always surrounded by animals, so being surrounded by animals and livestock while being able to do what she loves is a dream come true for her.
“Not many graphic designers can say they work for a veterinary college,” Kiersten said. “Every day is unique, and I am constantly learning and seeing new things.”
Her passion for graphic design first began in high school when she took a few classes that were design focused. After seeing her potential, her teacher introduced her to a graphic design journaling camp.
“Graphic design is more than just making something ‘look pretty,’” she said. “Our job is to help our clients to visually communicate their message to their audience.”
Kiersten’s advice to graphic design students is to avoid procrastination and to always carry around a sketchbook and pencil.
“You never know when inspiration will strike!” she said.
Kiersten is originally from a small town in Illinois. In her free time, she enjoys crafting, playing with her animals, and being surrounded by friends and family.
