Wrapping game day in maroon, white and green?
Mississippi State will be wrapping its Saturday, Nov. 5 homecoming game in the university's traditional maroon and white, along with a special splash of green.
During the 6:30 p.m. football game at Davis Wade Stadium with the University of Tennessee-Martin, MSU will participate in the Environmental Protection Agency's Game Day Challenge, a national competition encouraging college football fans to cut the amount of waste they produce. School officials will track and report reductions and disposal data that will be used to rank participating institutions.
MSU is also taking advantage of the waste-reduction focus to promote its own "Keep It Clean: Green Game Day, Sustainable Season" campaign, according to campus sustainability coordinator Jeremiah Dumas.
"Keep It Clean" encourages Bulldog fans and visitors to continue their game-day commitment to maintaining a sportsmanlike atmosphere and tailgating responsibly. In addition to being good sports--and ringing cowbells responsibly--the commitment includes proper disposal of tailgate trash and recycling aluminum, plastic and glass products.
"We think 'Keep It Clean' makes a Mississippi State game day even better and serves as a great complement to our campuswide recycling program," Dumas said. "We are looking forward to seeing how we stack up against the other schools participating in the Game Day Challenge this year."
The Student Association's environmental affairs committee will help promote the EPA Game Day Challenge and "Keep It Clean" campaign, according to SA president Rhett Hobart of Greenville. Committee members will be on hand to help sort recyclables after the game, he said.
The land-grant institution's ongoing green initiative also includes a successful energy efficiency monitoring and consumption reduction program that has resulted in significant cost savings and served as a model for other institutions, Dumas said.
