Process in place for faculty and staff working remotely to take desktop computers home
As part of facilitating as many Mississippi State University faculty and staff working remotely as possible, the university will during this period of emergency operations allow employees -- with the approval of their department head or director -- to take their desktop computers and necessary attachments home.
In order to do this, the department head or director must first issue a hand receipt to satisfy MSU inventory and property control requirements. MSU property cannot leave the office setting without the issuance of a hand receipt.
Second, employees should take a cell phone photo or make a diagram of how all the cables and accessories are connected to the computer to be able to replicate that at home. ITS is unable to make individual home service calls, so employees who take their desktop computers home assume responsibility for hooking it up correctly at home. Employees must have sufficient home internet access to make this feasible. Please keep in mind most desktop computers don’t have wireless connectivity built-in, which will require you to have a conveniently located ethernet port at home.
Alternatively, employees who need access to specialized software on their office desktop computer and prefers not to bring their desktop computer home can request remote desktop protocol (RDP) be configured for their MSU computer. This will allow direct access to your office computer from your home computer. To request RDP to your office computer, contact the ITS Service Desk by phone at 662-325-0631 or via email at servicedesk@msstate.edu.
