Smoke-free policy enhances healthy environment

No Smoking

Mississippi State University is a smoke-free campus. Official policy prohibits the use of any combustible or vapor products anywhere on campus property including university buildings, university grounds, university vehicles, parking areas and sidewalks. The smoke-free campus policy is part of the university's commitment to creating a healthy environment for all members of the campus community. Use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookah or other similar devices are prohibited by this policy.

Of particular importance, officials have noted a significant increase in students reporting the use of e-cigarettes. In the most recent survey administered by the Tobacco Control Unit in the MSU Social Science Research Center, over 30% of MSU students have tried an e-cigarette, like JUUL. Distressingly, these delivery devices have recently been associated with significant and serious illness among young users in several states. Additionally, these devices deliver nicotine in a way that is highly addictive to users.

While the university is not requiring faculty, staff and students to quit smoking or using tobacco products, they must follow the policy while on university property. Help is available for students and employees who wish to stop smoking or using tobacco products. These programs are free of charge with the exception of prescribed medications that may be required. The following cessation programs are offered:

* All students and employees: Free small group sessions to provide you resources and support to help you quit are available through Health Promotion and Wellness. Contact JuLeigh Baker at jbaker@saffairs.msstate.edu or 662-325-2141 for more information.
