Gholson new irrigation specialist
Drew Gholson
Mississippi State University agricultural leaders looked far and wide to find a new specialist to guide farmers with irrigation concerns.
Drew Gholson started April 1 as an assistant professor and the irrigation specialist with the MSU Delta Research and Extension Center and the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer Water Center. He replaces Jason Krutz, who was promoted to lead the Mississippi Water Resources Research Institute.
Gholson earned his bachelor’s in rangeland ecology and management, master’s in water management and hydrological sciences and doctoral degree in soil science, all from Texas A&M University. During the last seven years, he provided leadership for the Texas Well Owner Network Program.
Gholson said the priority of the Mississippi water center is to save water for future generations. Specifically, he wants to help agricultural producers use water resources more efficiently.
As part of his outreach and research efforts, Gholson will develop and deliver educational programs that support Mississippi growers with their irrigation needs, improve irrigation application efficiency, encourage them to adopt best management practices and promote conservation.
“We will conduct research on water efficiency, and as an Extension specialist, I will promote the adoption of these practices,” Gholson said. “I hope to show producers that saving water also saves money and time while maintaining or increasing yields.”
Jeff Johnson, head of the Delta Research and Extension Center, said Gholson brings valuable experience in groundwater issues and Extension methods from his work with Texas well owners.
“As our irrigation specialist, he will work with stakeholders, Extension agents and researchers to share information and educate through programs, workshops and demonstrations to improve the agricultural water use of the alluvial aquifer,” Johnson said.
