FBI biosecurity workshop coming up Oct. 18
Biosecurity and safety will be examined in detail next month during a free workshop at Mississippi State.
Experts from the FBI will be at the university Oct. 18 to share information and provide training for researchers, faculty, staff and students, as well as law enforcement officers.
Area first responders, health care providers and biotech company employees also are invited to participate.
The university's Office of Research and Economic Development is sponsoring the event, which will be held from 1-5:30 p.m. Online registration for the workshop is available here.
According to the officials of the federal law enforcement agency, a culture of responsibility and trust between the scientific and security communities is key to improving cooperation among law enforcement agencies and research institutions. All involved entities must work together to help prevent biosecurity emergencies that could threaten public health and safety, such as an attack against a lab, research facility or individual scientist.
"We are looking forward to having the FBI on campus to share this important information with the Mississippi State research community, and invite our peers from other Mississippi institutions and agencies to participate," said Patricia Cox, campus biosafety officer and assistant director of the regulatory compliance and safety office.
