Faculty, staff volunteers needed for Heifer Ranch trip

Mississippi State faculty and staff volunteers/chaperones are needed for the annual trip to Heifer Ranch, Arkansas, for the Global Village educational experience Oct. 12-14, 2018.

Heifer International is an Arkansas-based non-profit organization focused on community development to resolve poverty and hunger around the world. The Global Village is a hands-on educational experience where students are challenged to live in modeled developing world conditions. They are given problems to solve -- including how to gather enough food for the day -- and are required to engage their team-work and problem solving skills to overcome challenges.

All chaperones will participate fully in the experience, but should avoid helping students solve problems. This trip will include about 15 MSU students and about 10 students from Auburn University.

Chaperones must be qualified and able to drive an MSU van to and from Perryville, Arkansas (approximately five hours each way), from Oct. 12 to Oct. 14 -- leaving in the late morning of the 12th and returning in the evening of the 14th. It is important that all volunteers be able to participate fully in the global village experience, which includes sleeping in very rustic conditions, some moderate physical activity, and operating with minimal food. The cost of the trip for all participants will be covered by MSU, but participants should bring some money for snacks on the long drive to and from Heifer Ranch. Meals will be provided at the ranch.

While not required, volunteer/chaperones can also work with other faculty to design fun educational activities on issues of global poverty and food security for student participants. These activities will be conducted over the weekend in collaboration with another student group from Auburn.
