More than 400 Taido karate students from around the nation converged on Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for an intense, two-day summer workshop in June. The event culminated in skill tests and belt promotions with three Taido karate students at Mississippi State earning significant promotions.

-- Laura Terry, a senior information technology services major, was promoted two levels to white-gold belt.

-- Tony Garcia, a Food Science, Nutrition, and Health Promotion graduate student and full-time Information Technology Services employee, was double-promoted to purple-green belt.

-- Ronald E. Cossman, faculty advisor and research professor at the Social Science Research Center, was double-promoted to green-green belt.

The promotions were the result of training provided by the club’s sensei (instructor), Shelley Keith, a 2nd degree black belt and associate professor in the Department of Sociology.

Taido is a Japanese martial art featuring a three-dimensional approach to movement. It emphasizes changing the body's axis to avoid attacks while countering simultaneously.

The MSU Taido Karate club is open to all MSU faculty, staff and students who have access to the Sanderson Center. The class meets during the summer on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. and on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. in Studio B of the Sanderson Center.
