Buys honored with MS-AND Magnolia Award

David Buys

The Mississippi Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, or MS-AND, has named David Buys as a recipient of one of its most distinguished awards.

A Mississippi State University Extension Service health specialist, Buys was presented with the MS-AND Magnolia Award earlier this month.

The Magnolia Award recognizes individuals outside of the dietetics profession who make significant contributions to the field. It is one of four awards MS-AND makes each year.

Other criteria for the award include service in furthering the advancement of the dietetics profession and improving nutrition for people of all ages. Buys has overseen a project for the last two years that evaluates nutritional needs of senior citizens who have been recently released from hospitals.

Terezie Mosby, assistant professor and dietetic internship director in the MSU Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion, nominated Buys, in part, because of that project.

“Dr. Buys also took leadership in our six-week Extension Service dietetic intern rotation, providing them with experiences in recording a radio program, developing materials for Extension programs and many other activities,” Mosby said. “He conducts Extension Service programs and research in health disparities and seeks out dietitians and dietetic interns in his projects because he values their expertise.”

MS-AND is a state-affiliate association of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which has 70,000 members in more than 20 countries.
