Campus volunteers mobilize for move in Wednesday
A young tradition continues for the sixth consecutive year Wednesday, Aug. 10 when Mississippi State mobilizes more than 500 volunteers to assist new freshmen moving into university residence halls.
"MVNU2MSU," text language for "Movin' You to MSU," involves faculty, staff and student volunteers helping the first-year students and their families check into rooms and transfer clothing, computers and other personal items to their new "homes." Identified by their distinctive t-shirts, the volunteers also will distribute bottled water and provide general information about the 850-acre central campus area, its numerous facilities and the Starkville community.
Check-in activities take place 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Humphrey Coliseum. Students must show their campus identification cards to begin the process, said Ann Bailey, director of housing and residence life.
"This is a day that always is filled with excitement and anticipation for the students beginning college," she said. "It also is a day requiring a lot of work, and we try to give these new students a great Bulldog welcome by offering a lot of helping hands."
Bailey said all campus residence halls will open on the 10th.
With the addition of several new facilities constructed in recent years, MSU now houses nearly 4,000 students on campus, she noted, adding that two more will be under construction this year and ready for occupancy in fall 2012.
