Etheridge brings Stax Records tribute to Riley
Melissa Etheridge will pay musical tribute to one of the great soul music record labels of the 1960s and ’70s when she performs "This Is MEmphis Rock & Roll: A Soul-ute to Stax Records" at the MSU Riley Center on Thursday [Oct. 27] at 7:30 p.m.
A pre-show party with free refreshments will start at 6 p.m.
The concert will feature music from her just-released “MEmphis Rock and Soul” album. She recorded it earlier this year in Memphis, which was the home of Stax Records during its heyday. It features her passionate interpretations of such Stax classics as “Respect Yourself,” The Staple Singers, “Who’s Making Love,” Johnnie Taylor, “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” Sam & Dave and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” Otis Redding.
“I’ve spent months just honing in on which songs to record, the album’s ultimate feel and how we can marry today with yesterday and create something new,” Etheridge said during the recording sessions.
Tickets are $78 and $72 at the MSU Riley Center Box Office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at 601-696-2200.
