SSO, MSU Philharmonia to present concert Monday

The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Orchestra and MSU Philharmonia student orchestra will present a joint concert Monday [Nov. 23] evening in the university’s McComas Hall.
Free and open to all, the 7:30 p.m. performance sponsored by the Starkville-MSU Symphony Association and MSU Department of Music will feature the symphony orchestra’s chorus and university’s 20-member student orchestra, as well as guest performers.
The concert will begin with the Philharmonia’s performance of Gustav Holst’s “St. Paul’s Suite” (1922).
The majority of the program will include the performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria” (1715), which will be conducted by symphony chorus coordinator Doug Browning, also minister of music at First United Methodist Church in Columbus. Joining the Symphony Chorus will be members of the Community Chorus Association of Meridian under the direction of Robert Hermetz, along with the Starkville Homeschool Music Coop Concert Choir led by Alisa Toy.
In addition to Toy, soloists for “Gloria” include Betsy Swanson, assistant professor in the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine’s Clinical Sciences department, and Clara Ortega, system program coordinator at Columbus-Lowndes Public Library.
Michael Brown, MSU music professor and SSO music director, will conduct the Philharmonia during the performance.
