DAFVM Spotlight Employee: Leslie Reed

Leslie Reed

When the most seriously ill dogs and cats arrive at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Leslie Reed and her colleagues are ready to help them in the Intensive Care Unit.

As ICU supervisor, Leslie works with senior-level veterinary students and veterinary technology students and teaches them techniques and special things to look for when it comes to caring for these animals.

“I love working with and teaching the students,” Leslie said. “I love the fact that you never know what is going to come through the door at any moment. You have to be prepared for anything. But if I have to pick one favorite thing about my job, it would hands down be caring for these sick animals and knowing that I played a part in helping them recover and be comfortable while they were in the hospital.”

Critically ill patients often need extended care.

“These animals can spend days, weeks, even months with us during recovery, and seeing them go home to their family is great. It warms my heart and makes me remember why I joined this profession,” she said.

Leslie is an MSU graduate, but had planned a career in private practice.

“It wasn’t until I was doing my clinicals here at MSU-CVM that I fell in love with the Emergency and Critical Care aspect of veterinary medicine. I knew then that this was the place and position I wanted to stay in,” she said.

When she has free time, her favorite activity is spending as much time as possible with her children, Dixon, 9, and Lily, 6.
