Earlier this month, Jack Winstead, a board member of Friends of Mississippi Veterans (FMV), presented Mississippi State University president Mark E. Keenum with a FMV cap and received an MSU camo baseball cap from the president.

Honoring service men and women from Mississippi and giving them a final resting place was the goal of veterans and volunteers who joined forces to make the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery a reality.

The 75-acre cemetery site, located in Newton County, was donated by MSU from land that formerly was part of MSU’s Coastal Plains Experiment Station. The site opened a little more than three years ago and since then more than 200 veterans and family members have been interred there.

Beyond the cemetery’s construction and maintenance, FMV provides funds for special projects benefiting the state’s veterans and their families.

MSU has been recognized as one of the most veteran-friendly universities in the nation, thanks to its efforts to make higher education more accessible and affordable for veterans and their dependents. The university's role in this partnership with the FMV is another component in that commitment to serving those who have served our nation.
