CAAD to hold ‘Plagiarism in Design’ discussion
Each year, Mississippi State University hosts events that deal with the issues of integrity, especially in an academic setting.
As part of this year's Academic Integrity Week events, the College of Architecture, Art and Design has teamed up with the Department of Landscape Architecture to host a panel discussion that deals with the issues related to plagiarism in the visual arts.
The discussion will be held in the Robert and Freda Harrison Auditorium in Giles Hall on Nov. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
Panelists will include Michael Berk, director of the School of Architecture; Beth Miller, interim associate dean of CAAD and director of the Interior Design Program; Jeffrey Haupt, professor and painting emphasis coordinator in the Department of Art; Peter Bain, assistant professor in the Department of Art; and Sadik Artunc, head of the Department of Landscape Architecture.
David C. Lewis, interim director of the Building Construction Science Program, will serve as moderator.
The purpose of the symposium is to educate students in all disciplines across campus, as well as faculty and university administration on the issues of plagiarism within design and art.
The panelists will specifically discuss how the rules and regulations pertaining to plagiarism in writing do not necessarily apply to visual or graphic representations, how the teaching methods used in design and art do not necessarily lend themselves to allowing plagiarism to occur in visual work, and most significantly, that many significant figures in design and art actually promote plagiarism -- i.e., stealing of ideas and images -- as a homage or sign of respect for the original piece.
The event is free and open to the public.
