Greg Walker has joined the Mississippi State volleyball staff as an assistant coach, Jenny Hazelwood announced Aug. 2.
Walker will coach outside hitters and opposite hitters, work closely with player development and handle a wide array of additional administrative duties within the Bulldog volleyball program.
“I’m excited to get started with everything,” Walker said “We have good recruiting class coming in so I’m excited to get in the gym and get started with the girls. I look forward to working with Jenny and Sam and representing Mississippi State.”
Walker was most recently the men’s and women’s head coach at Pfeiffer University, a Division II school in Misenheimer, N.C. Under his direction, the Falcons posted a 21-6 record, a 13-game improvement over their 8-14 record the season before. The men’s squad also won the Conference Carolinas championship.
Before accepting his position at Pfeiffer, Walker was an assistant coach at Juniata College and helped guide the program to a 21-11 record along with a perfect 8-0 conference ledger. The Eagles were never ranked lower the fourth in the AVCA rankings.
Prior to a year at Mercer, Walker held a head coaching position with the Penn State women’s club team and captured the first league championship in school history. His first coaching position at Penn State-Altoona saw Walker guide the Division III program to a 21-9 overall record with a 7-2 mark in conference play.
Walker has also held several coaching positions and certifications with USA Volleyball.
“We are very excited to have Greg join our staff,” Hazelwood said. “He brings a wealth of experience with USA Volleyball and has a great enthusiasm for the game. Greg has coached at many different levels and has been successful wherever he has been and I can’t wait for him to start working with our team.”
A native of Pennsylvania, Walker graduated from The United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala., with a bachelor of sports science in sports coaching and also holds a bachelor of science in kinesiology from Penn State. Walker is also pursuing his master’s degree at USSA in sports science with an emphasis on NCAA compliance.
The Bulldogs begin the season on Aug. 30 and 31 hosting Southeast Missouri State and UALR in the Maroon Classic. MSU will play at 1 and 7 p.m. each day.
