Mississippi State University is now accepting applications and nominations for the position of state chemist and Mississippi State Chemical Laboratory (MSCL) director.

Kevin Armbrust, who currently serves as state chemist and director, is joining the School of the Coast and Environment at Louisiana State University in July.

The laboratory employs approximately 25 professionals and support staff, and is involved in regulatory and public service programs, analytical services, and assistance to citizens, businesses and research programs. The director and state chemist serves as chief scientist and administrative officer of the MSCL. Responsibilities include developing budget proposals, managing finances, overseeing technical programs, and preparing reports for the lab.

In addition, the state chemist has a faculty appointment in MSU's chemistry department or the biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology and plant pathology department, which includes teaching responsibilities of 10% to 20% of FTE.

The position reports to the vice president for research and economic development at Mississippi State.

Candidates must have an earned doctorate in chemistry or biochemistry, and be eligible for appointment to a tenure-track faculty position. A minimum of five years of management experience in a laboratory environment is preferred.

Salary will depend upon experience and qualifications. Review of applications will begin July 12.

Established in 1892 at the university — then Mississippi A&M College — the MSCL is a state regulatory agency. Offices are located in the Hand Chemical Laboratory Building.

Working with the Mississippi departments of Agriculture and Commerce and of Health, the MSCL jointly develops, promulgates, modifies and enforces regulations, standards and specifications of animal feeds, food, fertilizers, gasoline, kerosene, diesel and antifreeze sold within the state's borders. The three agencies also provide analytical data to ensure the quality, accurate labeling of these materials.

Other MSCL duties include research to promote the regulatory sciences, including a fellows program in which MSU faculty and students may collaborate on projects of mutual interest. For more information, visit www.mscl.msstate.edu.
