Coontz headlines Women's History Month program

Nationally-known historian and family studies expert Stephanie Coontz will play a major role Wednesday, March 20 as part of Mississippi State's Women's History Month Celebration and the Gender Studies Lecture Series.
Co-chair of the Council on Contemporary Families at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., Coontz will deliver the celebration's keynote address, "50 Years of Feminism: What's Changed and What Hasn't," at 7 p.m., in McCool Hall's Rogers Auditorium.
Coontz also will lead a workshop titled "Publicizing Research in the Mass Media." Open to all, the 2-4 p.m. program takes place in the Honors Forum Room of Griffis Residence Hall in Zacharias Village.
Coontz teaches history and family studies at Evergreen State College and is director of research and public education for the Council on Contemporary Families. She is the author of "A Strange Stirring: The Feminine Mystique and American Women at the Dawn of the 1960s" (Basic Books, 2011) and the award-winning "Marriage, A History: How Love Conquered Marriage" (Viking Press, 2005). She has appeared on numerous television shows including the Colbert Report, the Today Show, Oprah Winfrey and 20/20.
In conjunction with the keynote address, the MSU President's Commission on the Status of Women, co-sponsor of the events, will be accepting donations for Safe Haven Women's Shelter in Columbus, including personal care items and children's clothing.

Other events on the spring Gender Studies Lecture Series schedule include:
-- April 2, a 3:30 p.m. presentation by Abbie Conant, professor of trombone at the State Conservatory of Music in Trossingen, Germany. To be held in 328 Colvard Student Union, her program will be titled "The Status of Women in European Orchestras."
-- April 18, a 3 p.m. lecture by Lori Messinger, professor and director of University of North Carolina, Wilmington's School of Social Work. Titled "What is Culturally Competent Social Work Practice with LGBTs? Moving Beyond Beliefs and Biases to Knowledge and Skills," this program takes place in union room 329.
